In the story of the returning exiles in Nehemiah chapter 8 it is the people who are calling the shots. Ezra and Nehemiah had, in their own ways been responsible for bringing the people back to Jerusalem. Nehemiah brought about the rebuilding of the walls, whilst Ezra provided spiritual input, but leadership is not enough.

The turning point came when the people came and asked Ezra to bring out the ‘book’. There is no good having great teachers if no one wants to hear! The Bible tells us that there will come a time when people will have itching ears – just wanting to hear what suits them, what tickles their fancy.

If we are to see a real change in the state of today’s Church it will be because the people want it. Do you really want to hear from God? Do you really want to know His mind and His heart?

Well, then, start asking…
