When Elijah addressed the nation of Israel on top of Mount Carmel they stood in sullen silence. They were unwilling to choose the living God over the false god of Baal. They wouldn’t commit themselves.

It was only when Elijah suggested the sacrifice of bulls and the expectation of fire from on high that the people approved! Some things never change – we are still a people who are apathetic to the core. We couldn’t be bothered. We listen to sermons that challenge our faith and our behaviour and we ‘speak not a word’.

We an Elijah today to force us out of our apathy and into obedience to the only living God. Perhaps in His grace He will answer us with fire: fire that burns within in us with a passion for the God who made us and saved us for His purposes.

Remember it was said of Jesus: Zeal Your house will consume me.
