Family religion – Deuteronomy 6:2

“So that you and your children and your children’s children may fear the Lord your God all the days of your life.”

The Jewish religion is first and foremost a family centered religion. Chapter 6 of Deuteronomy contains the great ‘shema’, the creed that stands at the centre of Jewish religious practise. This is the same creed which Jesus quoted as the greatest commandment.

This creed was to be taught to the family, not the congregation. It is passed on father to son & daughter, as part of the fabric of daily life.

Of course, it begins with teaching, but must be backed up with practise: the godly lifestyle which works out the theory of loving the Lord your God with soul, mind and strength. Take care of the family and the congregation will take care of itself.
