First & Last – Matthew 20:1-16

We all care too much about other people; not their wellbeing, but whether they have more than us or not. It can be material goods, position, even godliness, but we desperately want to have more of it than anyone else.

The end result is envy, especially within the local church. We look at our work and we compare it with the work of others, and then we look at our comparitive rewards.

Seeking to be godly is a good thing, but not at the expense of others. As with love, you can have godliness without another suffering loss because you have it. It is not a finite resource! God can and will and wants to give godliness liberally to all, not matter how late they get into the family of God.

We should never begrudge someone else a ‘well done’ because we think that we’ve done better, or worked harder or longer. This is when the first will end up last and the last will come first.
