An Undivided Heart

Tuesday, November 25th, 2003

We are today, more than in any other day a people with divided hearts. There are a multitude of events, duties, needs and wants all vying for a place in our attentions. And we are failing in even beginning to meet the clamour and fulfill all that tugs on our hearts.

The Psalmist had it right – “give me an undivided heart” – one that has a single desire: God. All else will be properly met when we purely and simply seek only Him.

Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart to revere your name. – Psalm 86:11

Philippians 4:8 says:

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

The world would have you think of anything but these things! TV pushes every moral deviation, newspapers seek to titillate rather than inform, and the internet provides all this and more.

The battle for our souls is being fought in our minds. We can go one of two ways:

1. We can succumb to the invitations of this world and descend into the depths of self gratification and fleeting amusements, or

2. We can be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). As our minds are transformed our souls will follow.

The Bible assures as that “it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” Philippians 1:13
