The glory of Solomon’s Temple
Monday, September 26th, 2005fire came down from heaven
As soon as Solomon finished his prayer, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the LORD filled the temple. And the priests could not enter the house of the LORD, because the glory of the LORD filled the LORD’s house. When all the people of Israel saw the fire come down and the glory of the LORD on the temple, they bowed down with their faces to the ground on the pavement and worshiped and gave thanks to the LORD, saying, “For he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.” – 2 Chronicles 7:1-3
This is a glorious event! It’s not a great victory in battle, neither is it the greatness of the building that is being dedicated, yet, from God’s perspective this is the important part.
Solomon, the king has publicly bowed the knee before the God of the universe, and made God the centre of all that Israel is and does. Every aspect of Israel’s life is focussed on obedience to God and a turning to Him in repentance and expectation.
And as Solomon concludes, God’s glory takes over! God is pleased to honour Solomon’s consecration of himself and of his people to God. It is this attitude of heart that prompts God to reveal Himself to His people. It is not their skill, or knowledge, or might, or the brilliance of the abilities displayed in building the temple, but rather, a complete and utter God fixated dependence and hope.
As we take Solomon’s attitude to our hearts we will see God revealed in our lives and churches. And, as God is revealed, we will be drawn inexorably into a deeper worship and praise of He who is revealed!
