A Better Hope…
January 29th, 2011“…a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.”
Have you ever tried to find a single verse in a Bible book that encapsulates the key message or theme? It’s worth doing, just to make yourself think through the book as a whole, rather than taking it just verse by verse.
For me, Hebrews 7:19 sums up what the letter to the Hebrews is saying.
“…a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.”
The Old Testament system, familiar to the readers of this letter couldn’t give a hope of a lasting salvation, in fact, every aspect of the old covenant pointed to the nation’s failure.
Jesus, on the other hand is presented here as the perfect man, the perfect priest, the only effective mediator between men and God. On the basis of this hope we are encouraged to do one thing: draw near!
We now have freedom in Christ Jesus to draw near in hope. The phrase ‘draw near’ is used six times in the book of Hebrews (4:16, 7:19, 7:25, 10:1, 10:22, 11:6). This is the purpose of our salvation – to be allowed once more to draw near to God! What a privilege!
In Hebrews 10:18 we are told that there is no longer an offering for sin – Jesus did it once for all time and all men so that we don’t have to. There is now a new and living way of access opened into the heavenly places by Jesus’ death and resurrection. Surely we must avail ourselves of this amazing privilege and draw near to God today…
